Welcome Meetings provide an orientation for first-time visitors to HopeWell Cancer Support. These informal, drop-in sessions meet twice a week, on Tuesdays at 7 pm and on Thursdays at noon. They provide newcomers with an overview about the breadth of activities offered to cancer patients and their families. Please call to let us know you are coming.
Support Groups for both cancer patients and their families bring people together to share valuable information and to learn coping skills. All groups at HopeWell are facilitated by licensed health care professionals. By meeting weekly for two hours, the support group experience provides the emotional and social sustenance to help people regain control of their lives, foster hope, and realize they are not alone.
Social Activities bring participants, HopeWell staff, and volunteers together at occasions that celebrate the spirit of HopeWell. Popular annual events include pot-luck dinners and holiday parties.
Kids Circle and Teens Circle address the needs of children who have a parent, sibling, grandparent or other loved one with cancer. Through a variety of activities, children make new friends and learn coping skills. Emphasis is on boosting self-esteem while learning about change and understanding their feelings. All groups are faciliated by health care professionals.
Networking Groups introduce people to others who have survived similar kinds of cancers. Ongoing groups include those for the following cancers: breast, prostate, brain, ovarian, and lymphoma/leukemia.
House Calls Educational workshops offer the opportunity for specialized health care professionals to present a variety of cancer-related talks, complete wtih Q & A sessions. Speakers include notable physicians, psychologists, nurses, authors and nutritionists. Topics presented have included "Gender Differences in Reaction to Cancer Stress," "Survivorship and Financial Planning," "Basics of Pain Management," among others.
Stress Management features weekly sessions designed to lessen anxiety, reduce pain and enhance relaxation. Classes include yoga, Tai Chi, exercise, relaxation and visualization and meditation.
Special Workshop series occur throughout the year including Mindfulness Meditation, Spirituality, Art Therapy and Journaling. |
